Cost Pass–through with Capacity Constraints and International Linkages (with Reinhard Ellwanger and Hinnerk Gnutzmann), revisions requested at Journal of Applied Econometrics
Commodity markets are linked through international trade but separated by heterogeneous regulations and input markets. We investigate theoretically and empirically how regional, as opposed to global, cost shocks are passed through into global prices and how they affect production relocation decisions. Regional cost shocks are mitigated by capacity constraints in the short run. Once constraints bind, pass-through of a cost increase is enhanced while for cost decreases it drops to zero. We study the market for ammonia, a commodity largely produced from natural gas, to highlight the nonlinearity of the cost pass-through and its implications for unilateral climate policies.

Can Regulation Improve Service Quality? Evidence from European Air Passenger Rights (with Hinnerk Gnutzmann)
Under EU Air Passenger Rights legislation (“EC261”), carriers must provide assistance and cash compensation to passengers in case of long delay. We study whether the regulation reduces flight delay. EC261 applies uniformly to flights departing from the EU, but covers only EU carriers on EU–bound flights. Exploiting this variation, we find that regulated flights are 5% more likely to arrive on time, and mean arrival delay is reduced by almost four minutes. The effect is strongest on routes with little competition, and for legacy carriers. Thus, consumer rights can improve quality when incentives from competition are weak.

Internal Governance Mechanisms and Corporate Misconduct (with Nicolas Eugster and Oskar Kowalewski)
This study aims to provide new evidence linking internal corporate governance mechanisms and corporate misconduct, using a sample of 2,844 public US companies during the period 2007-2019. The results reveal that optimal size and diverse boards, including well-functioning audit committees, are negatively related to corporate violations. In contrast, we show that board members’ independence, activity, and ownership are positively related to a firm’s fraudulent activities. Therefore, not all internal governance mechanisms are related to lower corporate misconduct. Moreover, we show that some internal governance mechanisms, such as the share of female board members, mitigate only certain types of corporate misconduct.
